An important part of KMI’s Mission Statement and Core Ideology is our commitment to the environment. We, at KMI, strive daily to be good neighbors and corporate citizens in areas where we operate. Inspections are performed and documented, as required by the EPA, to meet permit requirements. In addition, our burners are tuned more frequently than EPA permits require, assuring emission limits are in compliance. Currently, we have installed warm mix systems on seven of our asphalt plants. These systems allow our plants to produce asphalt mix at lower temperatures, which in turn burns less fuel.
All KMI plant sites have Spill Prevention and Countermeasure Plans along with Storm Water plans. These plans ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent oil spills and outline proper response procedures should an accidental spill occur. An annual inspection is performed by an independent registered professional engineer to assure that our facilities are in compliance with these regulations. In addition, all sites are inspected on a regular basis during our production season by in-house environmental personnel for both air and ground compliance. KMI employees receive various levels of training for air, water and HAZMAT (Hazardous Material) compliance.
We recognize each asphalt plant, terminal and their respective crews that go above and beyond EPA requirements for environmental compliance, with the Environmental Excellence Award. Awards for 2009 were presented to four KMI facilities at our annual kickoff meeting. We, at KMI, take pride in our facilities and strive to keep them clean, orderly and operating at peak performance both environmentally and operationally.
